Winamp1於1997年發佈。隨著Winamp2的發佈，Winamp風靡全球，成為最流行的音頻播放器。

Winamp3於2002年8月發佈，使用了全新的程序架構以及更漂亮的面版。可是佔用資源卻比二代昤多，因而部份用戶繼續使用Winamp2。

它可以和眾多著名播放軟體相提並論，例如：Windows Media Player，RealPlayer，iTunes等，部份評價甚至比這些軟體更高。
