它程式體積小，支持換膚，支持通過外掛程式擴充功能（例如輸入輸出格式，音響效果，視覺效果）。

程序本身提供對WAV，MIDI，MP1，MP2，MP3格式的支持，通過外掛程式支持WMA，RA，Ogg Vorbis，Ape，Flac等幾乎所有音頻文件格式。

Winamp1於1997年發佈。隨著Winamp2的發佈，Winamp風靡全球，成為最流行的音頻播放器。
